When Should a Small Business Owner Talk to Their Banker?

Many business owners think it’s time to call their banker when they’re ready to expand, purchase a building or make another major investment.

But growth isn’t the only reason to call your banker.

In fact, some of the most valuable conversations happen before an unexpected expense or cash-flow challenge becomes urgent.

Should I call my banker before replacing equipment?

Yes. If an essential vehicle, machine or piece of equipment is nearing the end of its useful life, start the conversation before it fails. Understanding your financing options early can help you plan for replacement costs without unnecessarily disrupting working capital.

What if my business has an unexpected repair?

A major repair can quickly change your cash position. Instead of automatically using cash reserves or a credit card, talk with your banker. There may be financing options better suited to the expense and your overall business needs.

Can my banker help when customers are paying slowly?

Slower receivables can create a cash-flow gap even when your business is profitable. If customers are taking longer to pay while payroll, vendors and operating expenses remain due, your banker should know. A business line of credit or another working-capital solution may provide flexibility, subject to approval.

What if my inventory needs change?

Seasonal demand, supplier requirements, pricing opportunities or unexpected growth can all require businesses to purchase more inventory than anticipated. Discussing those changes early gives your banker time to understand the need and evaluate available options.

When is the best time to talk to a business banker?

Before you urgently need financing.

At Bank Michigan, we believe your banker should understand where your business is today, and where it may need to go tomorrow. Regular conversations about cash flow, equipment, inventory, receivables and upcoming expenses can help you prepare for both opportunities and challenges.

Don’t wait for a major expansion to call your banker. Sometimes the smaller conversations today can help you make better business decisions tomorrow.
